National Architectural Competition 1st Prize

The defunct warehouse of the Thessaloniki Port Authority was restructured to accommodate two movie theaters under the “Thessaloniki 1997 – European Capital of Culture” program. In addition, the listed building shell was restored. The functionally manifest solution creates a foyer in the middle of the ground floor, placing the theaters on either side, along the building’s main axis. The foyer’s sleek and vibrant surfaces contrast the earthly outlook of the exterior, while at the same time they seem to mirror the waterfront’s color palette. The solution includes a complex proposal of variable accent lighting that either emphasizes or mitigates the differentiations of the building’s interior spaces.
